OK here we go! my first blog, at the moment I am on a very steep learning curve where blogging is concerned but slowly I am figuring it out.
Having finished the OU’s Begin Fiction Writing course my thoughts now have turned towards September and the start of A215 Creative Writing. This contains a poetry element, which is something completely new to me, so I thought I had better do a bit of ground work first. By chance, when looking around an airport book shop, I came across Steven Fry’s “The Ode Less Travelled” As this seemed to be just the thing I needed it was promptly purchased.
Now naive I may be, but it can’t be that hard, can it? Getting a few lines to rhyme. After an afternoon with Mr Fry’s book I am knee deep in iambic pentameters, enjambments, caesura, trochaic and Pyrrhic substitutions not to mention the spondee. In short, to use another poetic term, I am “end stopped.” It seems there is more to this poetry lark than meets the eye. All this and so far rhyme has not been mentioned, how little I knew!
However I have complete faith in Mr Fry and I am sure my first ode is not far off.
